Renewing Your TIE Under the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement in Spain
If you’re a UK citizen living in Spain under the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement, it’s essential to stay ahead of your residency requirements—especially the timely renewal of your TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero). This guide walks you through the entire process, required documents, deadlines, and how our agency can assist you from start to finish.
📌 When Should You Renew?
According to Spanish immigration regulations, you are officially allowed to renew your TIE up to 60 days before its expiration date.
❗ However, in practice, most police stations in Spain — including those in Barcelona — will not accept your renewal request until the card has actually expired. If you attend an appointment before the expiry date, it’s very likely that the application will be rejected or not processed.
This means that although early renewal is permitted on paper, you should wait until your TIE is officially expired (or on the exact expiration date) before attending your fingerprinting appointment. However, we recommend booking your appointment in advance, as slots can be hard to find.
💡 Tip: You can prepare everything in advance (forms, documents, and payment) and book the appointment for just after your card expires to avoid unnecessary delays.
📝 What Are the Required Documents?
When renewing your TIE, you will need to prepare the following:
- EX-23 Form: Application form for TIE renewal. Must be filled and signed.
- Tasa 790 código 012: Official fee form. Select “TIE renewal” and pay the fee (currently ~€12).
- Passport-sized photo: White background, 32×26 mm format, recent.
- Original TIE card: To prove current legal residence.
- Passport (valid): Original and copy
- Padrón certificate: Issued within the last 3 months, showing you live in the same municipality.
- Appointment confirmation: Justificante de cita previa.
📍 What’s the Procedure?
The renewal process consists of two steps:
1. Appointment at the Policía Nacional (Fingerprinting)
You must book an appointment for “Toma de huellas (expedición de tarjeta)” at your local immigration police office. During this visit:
- You submit your documents,
- Pay the tasa if not done online,
- Get fingerprints taken.
After your appointment, they will give you a resguardo (receipt), which you must bring when collecting your card.
2. Card Collection
Approximately 30–45 days later, you can pick up your renewed TIE at the same police station. No appointment is required, but check the opening hours for card pickup (“Recogida de tarjeta TIE”).
